This session will be delivered by Joan Stark who has extensive experience of teaching, leading and supporting the primary English curriculum as well as working on school improvement issues.
Until recently, fluency has been a neglected area in the teaching of reading. Research shows that a lack of fluent reading skills is an invisible barrier to academic success, especially in the transition from KS2 to KS3.
We are gaining more understanding of fluency as the bridge between decoding and reading comprehension. Now we need to find different methods to develop it effectively in students of all ages. This afternoon session will cover:
- understanding the meaning of fluency in reading
- learning about oral and silent reading strategies for building fluency, word recognition and comprehension
- simple ways of assessing fluency.
Target Audience: English/literacy subject leaders, class teachers and teaching assistants.
